David Place is Director of the computational Unit at QUAKES. He is the designer and principle architect of the
LSMearth software system for micro-scale simulation of the physics of earthquakes and fault zones. He obtained his M.Sc. degree
in parallel computer science from the Université des Sciences et Techniques de Lille,
France in 1994. During his M.Sc., he worked at the Institut de Physique du
Globe in Paris, France on the development of earthquake simulation algorithms.
He completed his Ph.D. on the topic of earthquake simulation on parallelomputers to study the stick-slip instability at The
University of Queensland in 1998 and joined the research staff at QUAKES.
